Living off Your Blubber: Another Reason We Don’t Run Poles

Saturday morning I woke up early and did 4 pitcher assessments at The ARMory. My wife, Kathy, and middle son, Ryan (age 18) helped with admin and videography (Ryan is a video whiz). Two of the pitchers were new guys in whom we found multiple significant opportunities for improvement. I always get a kick when I see a player’s eyes light up with the realization of a plan to get better. The other two were quarterly reassessments. Both of these guys were initially assessed at the beginning of...

Born to Run? Not at The ARMory!

Geez! Some people take their Springsteen way to serious! After yesterday's post about my first concert and the Bernstein principle I received some vitriolic responses. "Hey knucklehead don't you know his name is spelled Springsteen, not Springstein?" And "Hey! The name of the song is "Born to Run", not "Tramps Like Us" And "Oh yeah? Well he's still the Boss!" That's an impressive argument. What are we 12 years old? Very mature. To my cyber critics who are also apparently card carrying...

Bernstein-Not Springstein is The Boss Here!

Bernstein—Not Springstein is the Boss Here! It was the summer of 1982. I was 19 years old, just after my freshman year of college. I left the comforts of my Sumter, South Carolina home and traveled to Keyport, New Jersey because I heard of something called The Jersey Shore League, where college kids could play summer baseball. I lived with a guy from my college team named Nick Russo. He could really hit. His batting average was over .400 that season so I thought it would be a good idea to...

That Guy’s Arm is Too Strong!, Sincerely, No One

This morning as I settled into work at my Physical Therapy clinic and sipped on my first cup of coffee, I booted up the computer to review the responses to yesterday’s newsletter. I was pleased to find a reply from an old baseball coaching buddy whom I honestly didn’t know was on the list. In his email, he asked a really good question, one I get quite often. So I asked for his permission to share it with everyone. (Cue the Dragnet Music…) The following story is true. The names have...

Hope is Not a Plan: Why Pitcher Assessment is Critical

I HATE THE MALL!.......... Except for the frozen yogurt store. When I make an annual trip to the mall (usually between December 21st and 23rd) to buy my wife a few Christmas presents, I usually have no clue what I'm doing. Typically I wander around aimlessly in a mindless fog staring at clothing racks and jewelry counters. After several hours, of inhaling perfumes, and lotions, I need a break. I need some Froyo! I usually recall from previous expeditions that there is a yogurt shop...

Get Confident or Get off the Field!!

Everyone I talk to seems to agree that confidence is the number one determinant of performance in baseball, in the workplace, and in life. However, there also seems to be a dearth of knowledge on how to get and remain confident. In baseball, it appears that most players have little or no idea how to create the confidence they need to succeed. They wait around to see how things will to go and pray that the baseball Gods will drop down confidence like manna from heaven. Its like they arrive at...

Amateur Gunslingers: A Dying Breed? Let’s Hope So

In the old Wild West days, if a town had a problem with a gang of outlaws, they often hired paid gunslingers to come in and take care of their dirty business. Many times, however, when the actual bullets started flying, these hired mercenaries with no vested interest in the outcome failed to deliver the desired results. The towns would have been better served to gather a few of the bravest among them, train them on the details of the mission, and let them make a stand to protect those they love...

ARMory Pitcher Ryan May Strikes Out 16 in 5 Innings!

Friday night was certainly a memorable one for ARMory student Ryan May. The Baton Rouge, LA native put on one of the most incredible pitching performances I have ever heard of. In what most witnesses are calling "simply amazing", the 6'2" senior right hander who pitches for The Dunham School, threw a no hitter, against last year's 3A state runner up, Loranger, allowing only one walk and 2 total base runners. This will blow your mind! In a 5 inning game shortened by the 10 run mercy...

Hey Pitchers! Don’t Forget the Lyrics

Wow!! Exciting Super Bowl! Congratulations to the Baltimore Ravens. Also, I thought Alicia Keys killed it with the National Anthem. The piano was a nice touch, don't you think? But who will ever forget this colossal failure by Christina Aguilera before the 2011 Super Bowl? Christina Aguilera National Anthem Mess Up (Fail) - YouTube I laugh every time I see that. The looks on the the faces of the coach, player and soldiers are priceless. How does a professional platinum selling...

Ryan Sullivan new 90mph guy?!

Ok... So it was on a Turn and Burn and not a live pitch, but Ryan Sullivan started pitching 2 years ago at 70 mph. He now tops out at 84 mph. This guy works his tail off. Relentlessly positive, and a bulldog on the mound, he's obsessed with getting better. This was the first time he ever felt a ball leave his hand at 90 mph. "It felt great", he said....(ya think?). Very happy for him. Ryan is an 18 year old senior at Durant High School in Plant City, FL who is committed to attend...
